Wild guava (goyave de chine) picking, Plaine champagne
During the months of April to June wild guava grow abundantly in the Mauritian highland regions. Taking a day trip out to the forest to pick guava and picnic is very popular with families during this period. When ripe the guava appear red or yellow in colour and are sweet and tangy - great for eating directly or taking home to make jam. The largest areas for picking are found at Plaine Champagne but the trees can be found in many upland areas. During the height of the season at weekends it can get very busy and parking can be difficult along Plaine Champagne road.
